This is how Søren Rose, a New York-based Danish designer merged the best of two cultures to transform a typical American mobile home into a stylish exponent for Scandinavian design and heritage. Søren Rose is a Danish furniture designer. In 2011 he moved from Copenhagen to New York, where he now runs the Søren Rose Studio out of an office in TriBeCa. “When I arrived in New York, I looked for a project where I could combine my Scandinavian aesthetics with something truly American,” Søren Rose tells me. The scene is central Copenhagen and he is in town to finalize the project in question. “I was quickly intrigued by the mobile home,” Søren Rose recalls. To him the vehicle represents the essence of the American dream: freedom! Freedom to go wherever and do whatever. “I thought to myself, why not make a Scandinavian interpretation of the American mobile home?” The idea kept coming back to him, and over the course of a year so, he would research, plan and draw on what would become a more and more tangible project. In the end Søren Rose chose the iconic silver Airstream trailer as the foundation of the project.
“What is so cool about the Airstream trailer, is that it reflects its surroundings,” says Søren Rose and continues with conviction, “so when it’s placed in a big city like New York you’ll get buildings and skyline, and when it’s in Arizona you get the beautiful desert.” What happens once you step into it, especially if it’s one of the older Airstream models, is somewhat of a design conflict compared to the clean lines of the exterior. And that aspect is what triggered something within Søren Rose and his team. “I wanted fewer, but prioritized quality items inside the Airstream. And everything came together when I spoke to Copenhagen Joinery, and they shared my passion for the trailer.”
Copenhagen Joinery would join the project, designing and building everything in unison with Søren Rose Studio, focusing on simplicity and materials such as oak wood, leather and stainless steel.
“The thing that was really important to us was to integrate technology,” says Søren Rose – and this is where B&O PLAY fits into the story, so pay attention. “The idea of taking a 1974 Airstream trailer and completely renovating it with modern technology, inspired me a great deal!”
